Modbus to LoRaWAN Gateway & Integration
Modbus is the most common protocol on energy meters, VFDs, chillers, pumps and PLCs. A Modbus-to-LoRaWAN converter polls selected registers and sends them wirelessly — removing the need to run RS485 cabling across the building or site.
- What problem do we solve?
- Modbus devices are everywhere, but connecting them usually means long RS485 runs, daisy chains through risers and a local BMS controller. That makes retrofits slow and expensive.
- How do we solve it?
- MatrixAI engineers the Modbus RTU / TCP ↔ LoRaWAN conversion — device audit, converter selection, mapping, decoding and commissioning.
- What technologies do we use?
- Modbus, LoRaWAN, network server codecs, MQTT / REST
- What can we integrate?
- IoT platforms, BMS, CAFM, SCADA, billing and cloud services

How we do it
Engineering steps
- 01Audit devices, register maps, baud rates and addressing
- 02Select the converter (battery or mains powered, number of slaves, register capacity)
- 03Configure polling tables, scaling and reporting intervals
- 04Build the payload decoder on the network server / platform
- 05Enable LoRaWAN downlink for register writes where control is required
- 06Commission and verify values against the device display
Typical data points
- Energy (kWh), power, voltage, current, PF
- Flow, volume, temperature
- Run status, alarms, fault codes
- Setpoints and operating modes
Use cases
- Wireless energy submetering
- Chiller and AHU monitoring
- VFD status and alarms
- Remote PLC data collection

FAQ
Modbus integration questions
How many Modbus devices can one converter read?
It depends on the converter model and on how many registers must be sent per interval. Typical designs read from one to several slave devices per converter; we size this during design.
Can we write setpoints to Modbus devices over LoRaWAN?
Yes, using LoRaWAN downlink, where the converter supports it. Downlinks are slower than wired control, so they suit setpoints and on/off commands rather than fast control loops.
Need Modbus RTU / TCP ↔ LoRaWAN integration?
Tell us about your site, assets and existing systems. A LoRaWAN specialist will review your requirements and propose a practical architecture — no obligation.
